MFA was commissioned by a private individual to examine the layout of their existing dwelling and provide a contemporary design solution which adapted the listed building into a more disabled friendly dwelling. A fundamental requirement of the brief was to provide sleeping accommodation on the ground floor and for the garden to be connected to the living accommodation. The design also had to be sensitive to the character and appearance of the listed building but overcome the lack of entrance legibility.
The design solution employed provided a simple, light and airy open plan living/kitchen/dining room extension in place of an existing UPVC conservatory. The extension incorporated a subtle linking corridor with porch which sought to address the legibility of the entrance. The new extension allowed for a ground floor bedroom to be formed within the former livingroom along with a new accessible bathroom and utility room within the former kitchen/dining areas.
The extension was clad in local stone to match the existing building and was complimented by the use of natural timber cladding with large areas of metal clad timber framed windows. A standing seam zinc roof with matching zinc gutters and downpipes provided a contemporary stance using traditional materials.
