Located on a farm near Aberfeldy and alongside two existing dwellinghouses, this bespoke 4 bedroom home was carefully designed to complement its rural Perthshire setting. Drawing inspiration from traditional timber agricultural buildings, the design adopts a contemporary interpretation of local vernacular architecture, creating a dwelling that feels both modern and firmly rooted in its surroundings.
From the outset, the clients sought a home with a simple, honest appearance, characterised by clean lines and a restrained palette of natural materials. Cost efficiency was an important consideration, however this was balanced against a desire to create a high quality home that would provide lasting value, comfort and durability. MFA worked closely with the clients throughout the design process to ensure that every element contributed positively to both the function and appearance of the finished building.
The resulting design combines straightforward architectural forms with carefully selected materials that reflect the agricultural character of the site. The simplicity of the building's massing and detailing allows it to sit comfortably within the surrounding farm landscape, whilst maintaining a strong and distinctive identity. Particular attention was given to ensuring that the dwelling related successfully to the neighbouring properties and wider farmstead without appearing pastiche or contrived.
Sustainability and energy efficiency were key drivers in the development of the proposal. The house was designed with high levels of insulation and airtightness, creating a comfortable internal environment capable of withstanding the demanding rural Perthshire climate. By focusing on the building fabric and incorporating energy efficient design principles from the outset, the dwelling achieves low running costs and reduced energy consumption while providing a warm and welcoming family home throughout the year.
