MFA was appointed by a private client to design a house that reflected the client's reduced mobility and allowed for future flexibility and adaptation. A further requirement was that both the living and dining rooms should have a visual and physical connection with the enclosed private garden.
Situated within a private walled garden within the Outstanding St Andrews Conservation Area and adjacent to a historic rigg associated with a B listed dwelling, careful consideration was given to the design, orientation and form of the dwelling as well as the relationship wth adjacent properties in terms of safeguarding residential amenity.
Rather than opting for a bold, contemporary and modern design, the client's preference was for a traditional style of building which incorporated quality, traditional finishing materials which reflected the predominant established character of its immediate environment.
The main challenges experienced on this project were safeguarding the existing protected trees as well as ensuring that the project was delivered within budget.
