Dalgairn was conceived as a house for the future, designed to maximise self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on external energy supplies. The project embraces a sustainable approach to both construction and occupation, incorporating a range of renewable energy technologies including a wind turbine, solar and photovoltaic panels, an air source heat pump and wood-burning stoves. The extensive surrounding grounds have also been planted to provide future sources of fuel and food, reinforcing the client's vision of long term resilience and environmental stewardship.
Constructed using a timber frame system, the dwelling places a strong emphasis on locally sourced and natural materials. Scottish larch was utilised extensively for the external cladding, while timber harvested from trees felled on the site, including sycamore and chestnut, was processed and incorporated into a range of internal finishes, adding a unique and personal connection to the landscape.
The natural timber façade allows the building to blend seamlessly into its woodland setting, whilst the carefully considered scale and massing ensure that the dwelling sits comfortably below the existing tree canopy. The result is a sustainable, low impact home that responds sensitively to its environment while providing a contemporary and comfortable place to live.
