Private Dwelling - NE Fife

Set within the rural landscape on the edge of a former quarry near the village of Auchtermuchty, this contemporary 4 bedroom family home was designed for a private client seeking a distinctive yet contextually responsive dwelling.  The elevated setting and dramatic quarry backdrop provided an opportunity to create a house that celebrated its surroundings while remaining rooted in the local architectural tradition. 

Drawing inspiration from traditional rural buildings, the design adopts a modern vernacular approach, combining simple forms and robust materials with contemporary detailing and large areas of glazing that maximise natural light and frame views across the surrounding countryside. 

The arrangement of the accommodation was carefully considered to create a strong connection between the internal living spaces and the unique landscape setting, whilst providing a practical and comfortable home for modern family life.

The bespoke design utilises a high quality palette of materials, including natural stone and zinc cladding, which complement the character of the site and provide a durable, low maintenance external finish.  The composition of materials and carefully considered architectural detailing contribute to a cohesive and refined appearance that balances contemporary design with the vernacular character of the local area.

Sustainability and energy efficiency were central to the design approach.  The dwelling was constructed using a highly insulated timber frame system and incorporates a whole house ventilation (WHV) system together with a ground source heat pump, significantly reducing energy consumption and providing a comfortable internal environment throughout the year.  

The development received a commendation from the Dundee Institute of Architects (DIA) in 2015 in the Best New House Award category.
