Private Dwelling - Kirkcaldy

Located within a small cluster of rural buildings on a farm on the outskirts of Kirkcaldy, this 3 bedroom dwelling occupies an enviable position overlooking the rolling Fife countryside, with far reaching views across the Firth of Forth towards the Lothians beyond.

The exceptional setting played a significant role in shaping the design, ensuring that the house capitalised on its elevated position and panoramic outlook while sitting comfortably within its agricultural surroundings.

MFA was commissioned by the private client to design a contemporary retirement home that would provide comfortable, flexible accommodation tailored to their future needs.  Central to the brief was the creation of a modern, light filled home that could be enjoyed predominantly on one level, whilst offering additional accommodation for visiting family and guests.

The design carefully arranges the principal living spaces and master bedroom suite at ground floor level, allowing the dwelling to function as a highly practical and accessible home for long term occupation.  Large windows and strategically placed glazing maximise the penetration of natural light throughout the interior and establish a strong visual connection with the surrounding landscape.  Open plan living areas create a generous sense of space and enable uninterrupted views towards the Firth of Forth and beyond.

To take full advantage of the site's exceptional outlook, two guest bedrooms were incorporated within the roof space. These rooms benefit from elevated views across the countryside and provide flexible accommodation whilst maintaining a compact and efficient building footprint. 

The client was committed to achieving a high standard of design and construction, and therefore considerable attention was paid to the selection of materials and detailing.  A palette of premium external finishes, including natural stone, natural slate and larch cladding, was chosen to complement the rural character of the site.
