MFA was delighted to receive instruction from Chris Brown Joinery and Building to provide architectural and planning services for a small residential development within the hamlet of Charlottetown in the heart of the Howe of Fife. MFA successfully argued that the site was within a cluster of 5 houses and therefore met one of the planning policy criterion which supported housing development in the countryside.
The development consisted of three 1½ storey 5 bedroom executive style dwellinghouses set within spacious plots. The dwellings were designed to have an internal layout which maximised the use of natural light including double height cathedral ceilings with extensive glazing. Externally the dwellings use a simple, yet effective palette of materials comprising smooth white render, slate and elements of natural stone. In response to the current building regulations, a low carbon approach was employed with the use of highly insulated timber kits, PV panels and air source heat pumps. The first dwelling known as ‘The Orchard’ was completed in September 2017 and the remaining two are currently under construction.
