Conservation

Scotland's rich historic environment is one of its greatest assets, encompassing scheduled monuments, archaeological sites, listed buildings, conservation areas, historic gardens and designed landscapes.

These places contribute significantly to our national identity, sense of place and cultural heritage, enriching communities and supporting tourism and economic activity throughout the country.

National Planning Framework 4 (NPF4) places considerable importance on protecting, conserving and enhancing Scotland's historic environment.  Historic Environment Scotland also provides key guidance to ensure that heritage assets continue to be valued, understood and enjoyed by future generations.

Development proposals affecting listed buildings, conservation areas, scheduled monuments and their settings require careful consideration and a thorough understanding of the relevant planning, heritage and environmental policies.  Achieving a successful balance between conservation and change often requires specialist expertise, informed design and a clear understanding of the historical and architectural significance of a site.

MFA has extensive experience in navigating the complex planning and design challenges associated with Scotland's historic built environment.  We provide expert advice on a wide range of heritage projects, including alterations and extensions to listed buildings, adaptive re-use and conversion projects, developments within conservation areas, enabling development proposals and applications affecting the setting of heritage assets.

Combining architectural and planning expertise, we work closely with clients, planning authorities and Historic Environment Scotland to develop sensitive and sustainable solutions that respect the character and significance of historic assets whilst meeting modern needs.  Our experience enables us to guide projects successfully through the planning and consent process, helping to secure the long term future of Scotland's built heritage.
